How to Inspect Used Car Paint Like a Pro (And Avoid Costly Mistakes)
Buying a new-to-you used car is always an exciting venture. You find the right make, the right model, and a price that fits your budget. You run a vehicle history check, and it comes back completely clear. Sounds like a done deal, right?
Not so fast.
As professional detailers, we see a massive issue all the time: cars that look absolutely pristine from a few meters away, but are hiding severe, costly paint defects up close.

In our latest video (which you can watch below!), Paul breaks down exactly why you can't always trust a clean history report, and how a recent black BMW that came into our studio completely flipped the script.
The Hidden Danger of "Clean" History Reports
When this black BMW arrived at the Tiki Details studio, the owner had done everything right. They ran the standard HPI checks, and on paper, the car was flawless.
But paper doesn’t show you what’s happened to the clear coat.
Once we turned off the ambient shop lights and brought out our specialized inspection torches, the truth was revealed. The car was covered in heavy swirl marks, deep scratches, and severe micro-marring. To make matters worse, we uncovered evidence of a poor past respray job around the panels. Frankly, it looked like it had been driven through a bush backwards!
If you don't know what to look for, you could easily buy a car like this thinking you got a great deal, only to realise later that the paintwork is completely dull, faded, and damaged.
How to Inspect Used Car Paintwork Yourself: A 3-Step Guide
You don't need thousands of pounds of professional detailing equipment to spot these issues before you hand over your hard earned cash. Next time you go to view a used vehicle, use Paul’s simple pro-tips:
1. The Smartphone Torch Trick π±π¦
Don't just look at a car in the shade or under flat, overcast skies. Pull out your smartphone, turn on the flashlight torch, and hold it a few inches away from the panels. Catch the reflection of the bulb in the paint. If you see a web of circular scratches radiating out from the light, you are looking at severe swirl marks.
2. Check the "Hidden" Spots π
Don't just stare at the middle of the doors. Get up close and inspect:
- The rubber seals and trim: Look for rough edges or paint overspray, which indicates a cheap, hurried respray job.
- The door shuts and apertures: Check if the paint texture or color shifts drastically from the exterior panels.
- Around the bumpers: Look for uneven gaps or overspray on plastic grilles.
3. Factor in the True Cost of Ownership π°
Finding paint defects doesn't mean you shouldn't buy the car. It means you have negotiating power. If a car needs a multi-stage paint correction to look good again, use that information to ask for a lower price to cover your future detailing costs.
The Transformation: Restoring the Deep Gloss Finish
Luckily for this BMW, the owner brought it straight to us. Being a black car, they knew that maintaining it in that battered condition would be an absolute nightmare. Black paint shows everything.
We put the vehicle through a meticulous paint correction treatment to safely level out the clear coat, permanently removing the swirls and scratches rather than just masking them with cheap fillers.
As you can see in the "After Treatment" section of the video, we successfully restored that deep, mirror-like, glossy finish that a premium car deserves. To lock in that hard work, we applied professional paint protection, making it significantly easier for the owner to wash and maintain going forward without introducing new scratches.
